Top five best romantic-comedies of all time by a rom-com junkie

I don’t do horror. Nor do I do action.

Unless I’m in a movie theater, it’s really hard for me to finish an entire movie in one sitting (or two, maybe three). But if you do hear me raving about a movie, it won’t be about the newest Marvel film or some 007-type of action. It’s going to be about a romantic comedy.

A twelve year old at heart, I will enjoy the cheesiest romance plot line that a script writer could possibly come up with. At the same time, I appreciate the classics, along with the more recent masterpieces.

Although I am not even close to having watched every rom-com ever created, here is my list of my personal top five favorites:

  1. La La Land

My favorite movie of all time. The colors, the songs, the choreography. Everything is so tastefully pieced together, and as a dancer, I appreciate the immense effort that went behind the scenes to perfect the most miniscule of details in this film. The plotline itself is entertaining, but the quality of the musical aspect of it multiples its greatness.

  1. Crazy Rich Asians

This movie was so empowering to watch as an Asian girl growing up in the US, where my race is still underrepresented in the media and Hollywood. I loved the almost fairytale-like plot line, and I really enjoyed how proud it made me feel to be Asian, though not “crazy rich”.

  1. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

This is a rollercoaster of a movie. It’s about a journalist (like me!) that was ordered to write a story about “how to lose a guy in 10 days”. It’s full of cringey moments that you just want to turn away from – but you can’t, because it’s so good that you want to bear through the pain of getting second hand embarrassment. It’s amazing.

  1. 13 Going on 30

Starring Jennifer Garner, this movie is about a girl who literally goes from being 13 to 30 in one night. Teenage girls tend to envy the freedom of being a successful and beautiful working woman, but the movie makes you think differently about how we should spend our teenagehood.

  1. The Prince and Me

And lastly, this is what I meant when I mentioned the “12 year old in me”. The plot is straight out of a fairytale, and I loved every moment of it. Some part of me still believes in Prince Charming and his white horse, and this movie delivers that dream.

That is my list of the best rom-com movies that come to mind. It’s sweet, it’s bitter, but it’s also funny.

Next time you’re stuck on the choosing screen on Netflix, consider these. You won’t regret it.
