“Spaceballs” hair sweeps school

There is always that one trend that sweeps by and grabs the attention of everyone, but could this new trend be the one that sticks around for a longer time?

Originating from the 1987 film spoof of Star Wars, Spaceballs is the movie where this new trend is first seen. Here is a quick recap of the movie: Planet Spaceball is in desperate need of a replenishment of air. President Skroob, a character from the movie, plans to steal air from planet Druidia by kidnapping Princess Vespa. President Skroob sends mercenary Lone Starr and his sidekick Barf, whose hair style has evolved from the half-man, half-dog character.

The trend was picked up by pop star, Miley Cyrus in her performance at the Video Music Awards. The hairstyle was stylish and convenient, and the trend gained momentum and popularity.

After picking up on the trend, sophomore Sidney Chase wore the hair.

“The very first time I saw it was on Ariana Grande’s Instagram,” Chase said. “She posted a picture of the hairstyle and I actually thought it was so cute. It was fun! I felt like Miley Cyrus, but in a good way.”

Chase talked about how producing this hairstyle may have had its quirks, but overall was an easy look to achieve.

“Sometimes the buns won’t stay in place and slouch to the sides. Other than that it’s a pretty easy hairstyle.”

Junior Brette Crocker recognized the spread of the trend, but couldn’t see herself fully indulging.

“I would never wear this hairstyle in public,” Crocker said. “I could maybe see myself wearing them to a hot music festival and of course at home just to get the hair out of face because it was actually really easy to do.”
Crocker said that she saw a fellow student wear Spacebuns, confirming the spread of the hairstyle.
