Senior Aaliyah Austin (3) blows past a Davis defender in their Nov. 18 game.

On Nov. 18 the varsity girl’s basketball team kicked off their season as they faced off against Davis High School. Though it was a well-fought game, the Lady Cards lost 50 – 69.

The game was filled with point-saving defensive plays by numbers 24 and 3, the entire team hurried down the court during every play, and they managed to block most of Davis’s attacks, all keeping the scores close. However, ultimately the team was not able to capitalize on some crucial plays.

The score was brought within 3 points as an organized play left number 0 wide open on the court and able to make 3-pointer before the end of the half. The girls seemed to finally be hitting their stride, so the second half promised to be action packed.

As the third quarter began, an incredibly athletic play from number 10 drew a defensive foul and after sinking both free throws, the ladies trailed by only 1 point. The crowd was ready to see the team take a deserving lead for the first time in the game.

In the fourth quarter, the girls were not able to stop the Davis offense. Little mistakes saw the score slowly drift further apart. While the game ended in a sour loss, the team definitely fought hard.
