End of fall brings a wave of television cancellations
Jan 6, 2015
As TV shows such as “Red Band Society”, “A to Z”, and “Selfie” came into the lives of many, the viewer’s fell in love with the characters and all their respective dramas. Recently, it has been announced that all of these shows have been canceled, and mass heartbreak has ensued.
The Fox series “Red Band Society”, flopping after one short lived season, follows the lives of six charming, but sick preteens and teens living in the children’s ward of a hospital. The diseases afflicting these children range from cancer, in patients like Leo and Jordi, to brain trauma, in the narrator Charlie.
As a “Red Bander”, as the Red Band Society fandom so affectionately calls itself, I can say the show is amazing. It broke my heart when the show was cancelled, especially since the last episode ended so abruptly. It’s very irksome to end an entire show with a major cliffhanger. Shame on you, Fox!
The ABC series “Selfie”, which also was cancelled after one season, is based on the novel “Pygmalion” and follows the life of Eliza Dooley, a narcissistic, internet obsessed woman who realizes one day that followers do not equal friends. She enlists the help of Henry Higgs, a “marketing guru”, to help her shake her “insta”-reputation and make a real connection.
With a quirky lead, the show is cute, but leaves something to be desired. It lacks a certain depth that mature viewers desire, but will make you laugh despite your best efforts not to. The lead, Karen Gillan, does a good job of playing an airhead, which isn’t the easiest role to play. Unaired episode can be viewed on ABC’s website.
Finally, we’re left with “A to Z”, an NBC show that (surprise, surprise) flopped after one season. The show is about the day-dreaming romantic Andrew and his accidental discovery of the woman of his dreams, the entirely too practical Zelda, when a computer glitch on an online dating website brings them together. Despite their differences, the couple hits it off.
Where the show falters is in the cheese category. With an overly romantic male, the show is somewhat off-putting. The lead female is also very awkward and irritating due to her insistence to use her head and not her heart. In my opinion, the show is worthy of a cancellation.
Different networks, different plots, but all shows met the same ends. While their fans disagreed with the cancellation of the shows, I think all the shows had reached the end of their plots. These shows weren’t original enough to continue, nor popular enough to cause an enormous uproar.
