Chinese Honor Society celebrates the new year
Feb 10, 2015
On 5 February, the Chinese Honor Society hosted their annual Chinese Luncheon. Club president senior Vivian Dang organized the luncheon.
“We started preparing a month ago,” Dang said. “We started with ideas and a couple of weeks to organize things. The luncheon is something new and something fun to do with our Chinese Honor Society and the Bellaire Chinese Club.”
The month of planning resulted in a very successful event. The luncheon featured tri-fold projects around the room and traditional costumes, as well as club members in traditional Chinese clothes.
“We have project displays, performances, and games,” Dang said. “We’re not doing performances at the luncheon this year, because performances will be in the auditorium during 6th and 7th period. This year we are just doing a more relaxed, interactive, fun-and-games deal.”
The Chinese lion dances were the stars of the luncheon.
“These costumes are lions that Chinese people go to watch during Chinese New Year,” said Dang. “It’s for good luck and it’s a traditional sport originating from China.”
Junior Tiara Tanugraha, an officer, had a key role in the luncheon. She set up the entertainment during the luncheon.
“My job was to do the games,” Tanugraha said, “so I was in charge of organizing the double dutch and learning how to double dutch, and also the bamboo dance; I helped choreograph that and organize that. I usually perform it for the Chinese Talent Show.”
The luncheon was followed by a Chinese New Year celebration and dance performance also sponsored by the Bellaire Chinese Club and Chinese Honor Society in the auditorium.
