Bellaire High School is known for its prodigious number of foreign languages that are taught at the school. There is Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, German and Italian, but a few students noticed a certain language missing.
Min Gue Park, a pre-calculus and algebra 2 teacher at Bellaire, is now teaching a Korean language class every Wed. during eighth period. Park is native to Seoul, South Korea; therefore, she was able and happily willing to accept the challenge of teaching the class. The class is open to any student at Bellaire.
“Right now they are learning just basic Korean language, and I am trying to teach them how to read Korean letters,” says Park.
Usually with language classes, the first thing that is learned is the alphabet and common phrases like “hello”, “goodbye”, and “thank you”. Park started teaching the class at the beginning of the school year, and the class is progressing at a steady pace. With eager students and a patient teacher, Bellaire may soon see a new population of Korean speaking students.
