Three Penny Press


The application process for the 2020-21 print + online Three Penny Press is closed effective May 1, 2020.  

Incoming 2020-21 staff members should have the following on file: Application, essay, teacher recommendations and evidence of attending at least one (virtual) summer camp and/or zoom session(s).

Are you new to Bellaire or considering joining in the future? Here’s what you need to know:

Newspaper I, II and III is an Honors credit. Students should expect supplemental class assignments during the school year and a summer packet with activities and recommended reading for the fall. Applications take place in the spring semester prior to the following year. Stop by Room 340 in January to inquire.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?  Students who are entering 10-12th grade. Anyone who wants to write about things that matter. Anyone who wants to tell the stories of Bellaire students and teachers. Has your English teacher told you that you have strong voice in your writing? Consider becoming a newspaper reporter on the Three Penny Press where you can write for an audience.


  • Strong writers and readers.
  • Students with excellent attendance.
  • Overall strong students (you must be passing every class).
  • Reporters, photographers, copy editors, graphic designers, artists, social media/digital leaders, business managers or anyone who wants to learn these skills.
  • Students interested in learning broadcast journalism, become a high school news anchor, creating videos, and hosting podcasts.
  • Students who thrive in a fast-paced independent deadline-driven environment classroom lab.
  • Positive “I can learn it” and “I will try it” attitudes.
  • Students who are open to becoming proficient in every area of multimedia journalism.
  • Students who want to write about things that matter.
  • Students interested in building a portfolio by publishing your work in the Three Penny Press.
