Football captain shines this season
Sep 18, 2014
The captain of the varsity football team and starting linebacker, Shellie Adams, was looking forward to a great season. He spent three years working hard to become a captain his senior year, and was excited to achieve his goal and lead his team to a successful and positive season.
“It was like a ladder,” Adams said. “I started at the bottom and I made it to the top.”
Adams began football at nine years old, and continued working. Adams had a clear vision of how he wanted his future to play out. He worked hard in the hopes of attaining a football scholarship to Stephen F. Austin University. To the rest of the team, his dedication made him an obvious choice for the captain position. He won it by a landslide.
“Adams was a kid that was with us for the last four years,” head coach Trey Sissom said. “He came up through the program, and he did well in the classroom. He was a kid that, at his position, obviously had a lot of experience over some of the other kids. He was just a natural leader for us.”
Impressing everyone with his skill, perseverance and good nature, Adams was a friend to all the players and coaches.
“Adams was really cool as a captain,” teammate and sophomore linebacker Donavin Charles said. “He was a great leader, and overall he was really good at football.”
Dedicated to making the season a good one Adams only focused on positive things. Even when asked about the game against rival Lamar.
“I’ll see Lamar when I see Lamar,” Adams said.
Exceeding the national average, Adams had 21 solo tackles and 37 total tackles, averaged 4.6 tackles per game and made 2 fumble recoveries this season. (Statistics courtesy of maxpreps.com.)
