On Thursday, March 10, the Bellaire choir donned their uniforms and headed to United Methodist Church to perform their UIL showcase concert. The varsity choir, Varsity boys, varsity girls, and Madrigal, a small group, performed numerous songs, such as “Tabula Rasa”, “Sing to the Lord” and “Crossing the Bar”.
In order to prepare, the choir held rehearsals every Monday night. Junior Jackson Hardin, a member of the varsity choir and Madrigal elaborated on how they practiced.
“When we first learned our music, the key was learning the music before we were able to develop any of it,” Hardin said. “We went from there to working on musical techniques.”
Hardin explained how she believed the choir improved since they began rehearsing.
“Besides learning the notes and rhythms, we got more musical and more confident in our singing, which helps with presentation,” Hardin said.
Junior Daniel Ramirez, also a member of Madrigal, described the experience he gained when preparing for this concert.
“In preparation for UIL, I wanted to become more independent, especially when we’re in a mix of varsity,” Ramirez said. “We’re going to be singing with two or three people of our same part. Being independent is a big thing because you might not have someone immediately at your side. You should be able to know the music well enough to be able to perform by yourself.”
Hardin recounted her favorite memory from the process of preparing for the concert.
“My favorite thing is showing the other classes what we’ve done as individual groups,” Hardin said. “It’s nice to see the faces of people who haven’t heard it before,”
