Senior rates favorite Christmas treats

Senior Maria Perez shows off her favorite holiday treat, a tray of Pillsbury cookies.

Christmas Tree Cakes – 5/5

These cakes have everything you could want in a Christmas treat—delicious, festive and fun. They’re  beautifully decorated and taste just like Christmas. These take the crown when it comes to holiday treats.

Limited Edition Peppermint Oreos – 5/5

Usually, I despise Oreos. The regular flavor is too boring and uninteresting for me. However, the peppermint-flavored Oreos call my name every holiday season and I can’t miss out on. The sweetness and softness of the peppermint icing are just right and balance the hard, rich, chocolate cookies on top and bottom.

Hot Chocolate – 5/5

The holiday season is incomplete without hot chocolate. Different brands bring their own spin to the classic holiday beverage but all promise to deliver warmth joy for the approaching Christmas season.

Pillsbury Sugar Cookies – 4/5

These sugar cookies are, without a doubt, delicious. However, they taste the same as the non-Christmas, regular cookies Pillsbury has year-round. They do offer a fun, cute Christmas design on each cookie, which offers something unique, and they can be eaten raw or baked, so they are great on the go.

Christmas Crunch Cereal – 4/5

Cap’n Crunch is one of my favorite cereals, and the Christmas version is even more enjoyable. The incorporation of new colors and fun holiday shapes is what makes this version so special. Also, the box itself is very festive, and that is what initially made me want to buy it.

Peppermint Cheesecake – 3.5/5

Peppermint is my favorite holiday flavor, cheesecake is my favorite dessert and together they do not disappoint. Although I do not eat this too often in the Christmas season, it is an unforgettable sweet that deserves more attention. If you are a peppermint fan, you will be delightfully satisfied with this cheesecake.

Gingerbread Cookies – 3/5

Since my childhood, I have always thought of gingerbread cookies when I hear the words “Christmas season.” They are also another staple for the holidays. However, I find them to not be quite as enjoyable as other treats. They are kind of bitter and are just not my favorite. What I do love about them, however, is how festively they are decorated and how the childhood story of the gingerbread man has shaped the decoration of them. Gingerbread cookies are always fun to look at, as well as decorate.

Gingerbread Macarons – 3/5

These are expensive, not a very convenient treat to find and again, include one of my least favorite flavors: gingerbread. Also, I have a love/hate relationship with macarons, so overall, gingerbread macarons just were not the most festive and enjoyable combination for the Christmas season. If you love either gingerbread or macarons, this treat might be for you.

Cherry Pie – 2/5

Pumpkin and apple pie remain as my favorite pies, and cherry does not take their spots. Cherry, although it is a flavor associated with Christmas for some people, does not satisfy what I think of as the holidays. It tastes average for me and is not too bad, but it is not my favorite either.

Jolly Rancher Candy Canes – 2/5

Candy canes are a staple for holiday treats and what come to mind when I think about the holidays, and I think the jolly rancher candy canes are a fun twist on a classic treat. I was looking forward to trying them even though I am not crazy about jolly ranchers in general, but I wanted to see how the flavors would be incorporated into a peppermint flavored candy cane. I was disappointed. It was just strange to eat, and not what I was expecting. I much rather prefer the classic candy canes.

Pillsbury Sugar Cookies – 5/5

These cookies are my absolute favorite. The texture is soft and the amount of sweetness is perfect.

Christmas Tree Cakes – 5/5

The way these are decorated (white icing, red stripes and green sprinkles) definitely gets me in the holiday spirit. The cream inside of them adds such a good taste to the treat. I look forward to buying these every year.

Christmas Crunch Cereal – 4/5

This cereal is just another flavor for the Cap’n Crunch cereal. However, it is limited edition and the colors and shapes that the cereal has excite me.

Hot Chocolate – 4/5

Hot chocolate warms me up and makes me feel as if Christmas is getting closer. It brings me happiness, especially if soft marshmallows are added on top.

Jolly Rancher Candy Canes – 3.5/5

Although candy canes are easy to break, the flavors of the peppermint and jolly ranchers make up for it. The chilly aftertaste is what I enjoy the most.

Limited Edition Peppermint Oreos – 3/5

Oreos have always been one of my favorites cookies. The crunchiness of the cookies and the frosting that is stuffed inside are such a good combination. However, the flavor of peppermint and chocolate together is a bit disappointing.

Gingerbread Cookies – 2/5

I am not a fan of the gingerbread flavor, but the cookies are overall really cute and they remind me of Christmas, which is what brings me delight.

Gingerbread Macarons – 1/5

The taste of gingerbread is not my favorite and neither is the taste of macarons. Some macarons are hard and crumbly as opposed to soft. In addition, these are expensive.

Peppermint Cheesecake – 1/5

The flavor does not impress me at all. I am definitely not a cheesecake lover. These are overhyped and too pricey.

Cherry Pie – 0.5/5

The crust is too bitter and thick. Not enjoyable at all.
