The room is dark.
You toss and turn in your bed, hearing the floorboards creak outside your locked door. Maybe it’s just the wind, or the washer running again in the middle of the night. But you know that someone, or something, is waiting for you on the other side. The doorknob slowly turns, and the door begins to open eerily.
But it was all just a figment of your imagination, merely inspired by the spooky music you were listening to before bed.
Here are five songs that are on my playlist and should be on yours to listen to at 3:33 a.m. on the morning of Halloween — if you’re brave enough to listen after dark.
“Thriller” by Michael Jackson
“You see a sight that almost stops your heart.
You try to scream, but terror takes the sound before you make it.”
That’s the exact feeling “Thriller” gives me when I listen to it. The combination of Jackson’s vocals, the haunting beats and the chilling outro all adds to the spookiness of the song itself. Whenever I play it with my mom, I can’t help but jam to the music. It’s a song that always keeps you second-guessing with what tune is coming next. Since it’s also a classic, it’s the best song to add to your Halloween playlist.
“Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell
“I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
Tell me, is it just a dream?”
“Somebody’s Watching Me” embodies the Halloween spirit with its paranoid lyrics and eerie undertone. I’ve listened to this song a handful of times, yet I still can’t grasp how creepy this song sounds, which is great for Friday, Oct. 31. Even though the song is from the 80s, it’s still timeless. I can’t help but look over my shoulder each time I listen, regardless if it’s day or night.
“Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr.
“Who are you going to call?
Ghostbusters!”
Those two beginning lines of the song are the most iconic, and listened to, part of “Ghostbusters.” If you haven’t ever heard of this song, you are missing out. It is a complete classic from the early 80s, and from the movie “Ghostbusters.” Every generation since then has heard of this song. I love blasting this song while trick or treaters are coming over, because it’s fun and enjoyable to listen to. Despite its comedic tone, it’s definitely a must-have for any Halloween playlist.
“Bury a Friend” by Billie Eillish
“What do you want from me?
Why don’t you run from me?”
Why don’t you have this song on your playlist?
Billie’s eerie vocals and distorted music in “Bury a Friend” feels like you’re face-to-face with a monster. When I listen to this song, I imagine betrayal, figures lurking in the corners of my house and a zombie popping out of nowhere. This song gives me goosebumps and will definitely haunt your playlist.
“Monster Mash” by Bobby Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers
“For my monster from his slab, began to rise.
And suddenly to my surprise — he did the monster mash.”
“Monster Mash” has fun lyrics, a catchy beat and is yet another one of the many classics on this list. Instead of haunting and scary tones, I see monsters dancing to the rhythm in a goofy way. It’s the perfect song to get into the Halloween spirit, which will also make the perfect ending song to make your playlist fun.
Your door might slowly open, and you might see something in the corner of your eye — but when it turns 3:33 in the morning on Halloween, let these songs haunt your playlist.
