Because of the literary movement started by Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga, many of the books that have been trending are about vampire-human romance. After a while, the plot lines
of mystical vampire stories become predictable and dull. Suzanne Collins, author of the chart- topping trilogy The Hunger Games, took an exciting turn away from the usual fantasies that include werewolves and vampires.
The Hunger Games is told through the eyes of Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist and lovable heroin. Its set in post-apocalyptic North America, now called Panem. The entire society is controlled by the government, which they call Capitol, a cruel and inconsiderate system. Once a year the government chooses one boy and one girl, ranging from ages twelve to eighteen, from each of the twelve districts of Panem to compete in a game of survival. In this game, the competitors are placed in an environment completely controlled by the “game makers”, and they are forced to do whatever it takes to save their own lives. Only one person can win the game; everyone else must die.
The trilogy includes The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay. All of the books are full of suspense, comedy and the ” didn’t-see-that-coming” twists. The Hunger Games is awesomely imagined, nightmarish, exciting and romantic. Once you’ve started reading it’s hard to tear away from
the capturing story.
