Russian Luncheon
“The most rewarding thing in life is giving, isn’t it?”
These were the words of Russian teacher Lisa McLendon when asked what she finds rewarding about the annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, hosted by the Russian Club. The luncheon, which was held on Friday, October 10th, was in appreciation of the teachers of Bellaire High School and all of the work that they do. This event was unique as it was it was completely free of charge.
“I noticed that a lot of people don’t go [to luncheons] because they don’t have the money, or because they might not want to spend the money. So why not have a free lunch?” said McLendon.
The Russian Club members had been preparing for a while in advance for the special day, said McLendon, who is the club’s sponsor.
“We worked very hard. We’ve been working for a month at least. [I]t’s not just the kids. The parents have all been coming to bring food,” said McLendon.
Sandwiches, chips, cookies, and various beverages were provided at the luncheon. Teachers were also provided with complimentary nametags and flowers. An atmosphere of joy and gratitude filled room 243 as teacher after teacher stopped to thank McLendon and club members for their generosity.
“Teachers work so hard, and this is the chance to just show a little bit,” said McLendon. “Just the idea of giving is good-to think about “What can I give,” instead of “What can I get?”
Russian Club secretary, junior Ginger Sanchez, described her favorite part about participating in hosting the luncheon.
“Seeing all of the teachers,” said Sanchez. “I only have seven teachers a year so I don’t know all of the teachers, but most of them come so it’s kind of cool seeing all of them,” said Sanchez.
On the turnout at the luncheon?
“It’s fabulous,” said McLendon.
