Upon the recommendation of my sister I watched the first season of iZombie in a single weekend. I was definitely skeptical seeing as I do not like the gore, blood and brains that came with anything zombie and something too scary would leave me wide awake in the middle of the night. However, I tried it only because my sister was well versed in TV-show-critiquing and she never failed to recommend things I would end up being obsessed with for weeks.  iZombie was of course no exception.

Classified as comedy, drama, horror and crime-fiction iZombie took many clashing concepts and managed to create a wonderful TV show. Olivia Moore, once ambitious resident turned zombie, began working in the morgue to feed her cravings for human brains without bringing any unwanted attention. The show gives a different take on the beloved brain-eating monsters featured in countless films. Olivia’s coworker and eventual ally, Ravi Chakrabarti brings a relatable element, and his understandable cowardice drags out humor in the most unlikely places.

Although the show is capable of drawing audiences in with its unconventional, almost delightful, portrayal of a classic monster and well-placed jokes, the crime aspect falls flat. The mysteries are predictable and not very memorable, but this is overshadowed by the show’s enjoyable absurdity.

Olivia can see the memories of the people she has eaten the brains of and her ability helps her solve the mysteries around her. The ability is interesting and adds another interesting point to the show. The drama genre comes in with her boyfriend, Major Lilywhite. Their relationship is cute and leaves the audience hoping they could be together. Olivia breaks up with him in order to protect him because she is afraid she could one day end up killing him in her crave for brains.

Overall iZombie is a great show and I know I will spend my winter break catching up with it.
