Coraline Review
The movie Coraline is about a girl who moved into a new apartment in a new state and feels neglected by her parents. She discovered the other world, an alternate world, just like Coraline’s apartment but more fantastical. This other world fulfills her desires that are neglected by her parents. However this word is not all that it seems. The other mother, the queen of the other world, has a plan to keep her in there forever.
Although there is some dysfunction between Coraline and her parents, the actions of both Coraline and her parents are realistic and sympathetic. Their relationship is improved by the end of the movie.
All the mechanics and rules of the magical other world make sense. As the plot progresses we see how and why the other mother operates, with the exception of one major event near the latter half of the movie.
The foreshadowing was not out of place and it came from characters where it sense that they would have some knowledge of the other world. I like how it is established that the other world was around before Coraline and did not just materialize when Coraline came to the new apartment and has had some impact on the apartment where the movie takes place.
The visuals are very interesting while not as technically advanced as the latter works of Laika such as kubo, there is more creativity behind the design and aesthetic; The wonder land and how it corrupts and decays latter on in the second half of the movie.
Overall “Coraline” is a great movie to watch.
