When most people hear the words Lego, and Batman, usually 10 year old boy, and painful plastic bricks lodged into your feet come to mind. So when The Lego Batman movie came to the big screen, despite hearing raving reviews from friends, my money was not on the movie being touching, humorous, and incredibly relatable. Not having seen the predecessor of this particular Lego film, The Lego Movie, I didn’t have any idea about what to expect.

Needless to say, I left the theatre feeling as though I had seen one of the best movies in a long time.

The Lego Batman Movie, although oddly animated, since everyone in the film was, well, a lego brick character, portrayed an incredibly complex and fun to watch movie in a way that most likely couldn’t be done in any other way. Following Batman, Gotham City’s resident super-vigilante, the movie was more than just a mash of action sequences, and Batman being really cool. This movie was full of moments that were incredibly relatable to most people’s everyday lives, (Alone eating a lobster dinner in the dim room? Watching a rom com on a big TV without anyone else to watch it with? Talk about a Saturday night), and moments that brought up questions about relationships, facing fears, and what it means to be part of a family.

That isn’t to say that the more serious parts overshadowed all of the fun taking place. From wacky stunts such as the conveniently exposed explosives all over the city, to hilarious references like Michael Jackson lyrics, and perfectly placed gags and jokes, this movie showed that a kid’s movie can be more than what most people initially think of it, handing both serious and humorous topics extremely well.

Overall, The Lego Batman movie was a really well done movie, one that can be fun for both adults and kids to watch, especially together. With its perfect blend of humor and more mature themes, it’s a movie that will hopefully have you laughing, thinking, and having an awesome time.
