Profile on Isaiah Thorton

The following interview is in recognition of versatile student athlete senior Isaiah Thorton. He is on basketball, football, and track. His perseverance and dedication to not only his sports but his future education is exceptional. Thorton kindly explained what he is involved in and how far he is pushing himself to go.

I have heard that you play a lot of sports and are active around the school. What are you involved in?

Isaiah: I am involved in basketball, football, and track. I also joined choir last year.

How long have you been playing each of the sports you play?

I: I joined football last year, and am currently on varsity. I have been playing basketball recreationally for forever, but have been on junior varsity since freshman year. However, this year, I am hoping to make varsity in the upcoming tryouts in November. As for track, I have been running track since middle school. That’s what I am hoping to get a scholarship for.

What schools are you interested in attending or hoping to get a scholarship from?

I: I am hoping to go to the University of Houston. They have a pretty good track program.

What do you run, and what is your time?

I: My record for last year was the 40-meter dash, and my time is 4.05 seconds. I am starting to get back into track since I took a break from training specifically for track in the summer. I go to the gym and workout every day to keep myself in shape for my sports, but I work on specific skills for each sport every time I go. I just need to make sure that I really increase my time to catch attention from colleges. I am working very hard to push myself in those areas, so I start seeing more positive results.

Out of all of the sports you play, what is your favorite?

I: I would say that basketball is my most favorite sport just because it makes me so energized and excited. I love all of the sports I play, but basketball is just rooted in me. The way I feel out on the field and on the court is like nothing else I have experienced. It’s just so much adrenaline when friends and family are cheering me on and I’m on this huge team with the whole student body on our backs. It really is an amazing feeling. I think that’s why I keep playing.

Earlier, you said you were in choir. What made you join?

I: I used to be in choir in middle school and decided that when I got to high school, I just wanted to try new things. I realized last year that I was missing that outlet for myself, because I love music so I decided to join again. I would say that it is my second home. I feel very comfortable to be myself in the choir room. I’m a baritone, so it is cool to me to see what I can do with my voice, and what the entire group of guys can do as a unit.

What do you want to pursue after high school?

I: I am interested in University of Houston for their business program which is what I want to go into. I want to be in a professional setting and help companies build themselves and even possibly create my own business. I feel like it is a good degree to have, and I would be able to have proper background for various jobs with that degree. I am very excited to go off to college and start fresh. I am excited for what my future has in store for me.
