From one event to the next, she never gives up.
Sophomore Elizabeth Gamero’s days are filled by a variety of passions, from the rhythmic beats of the marching band to the thrill of cross country races to the “sisterhood” of soccer. These interests have not only shaped her high school experience but have also influenced her personal growth and development.
“The reason I do everything that I do is just because I really like all of it,” Gamero said. “I’ve been in [band] since third grade. I’ve always enjoyed the atmosphere and people around me. And then with dance, that’s something new I discovered. I felt like I fit in because I felt more confident about myself, and I was able to show my self expression.”
Gamero’s close friend Elise Phillips recognizes how Gamero’s passion and dedication influence those around her.
“Because of her hard work, she achieves the best, showing others that commitment really does bring rewards,” Phillips said “I guess it’s a reminder that when we put our heart into something, we can do anything.”
Gamero’s involvement in cross country has been a long-standing passion, as she started running in seventh grade and quickly developed a deep love for the sport. Last year, she placed third at the district competition, earning her a spot at the regional championships.
“It was definitely a hard course, but it was something new,” Gamero said. “We went to regionals, and it was very fun.”
Gamero recalls the nerve-wracking experience of competing at the regional cross-country meet, where she doubted herself but ultimately pushed through.
“I was just contemplating life,” Gamero said. “Part of me wanted to be there, but in my head at the moment, I just didn’t want to be there. I thought about [running], and I was like, ‘Oh no, no, no.’ The gun went off, and I switched back to reality. I was like, ‘Oh, shoot, I actually have to run now.’”
In addition to her talent in cross country, Gamero has been a dedicated member of the school’s marching band. During one of the football games, Gamero describes her exhilarating experience of the “Hype Train,” where she and her fellow band members come together with the cheerleaders and Booster Club to create an “electrifying atmosphere.”
“It’s a really great feeling just to have fun with people who love you,” Gamero said.
Gamero’s involvement in the breaking community has also been a transformative experience. She recalls attending an intensive camp at KnowBreaks, where she learned new techniques and choreography.
“It impacted me with my confidence and helped my dancing. I was able to study each move and perfect them. The people I dance with also were at the camp, so it really helped me get closer with them.”
According to her breaking coach Paris Kent, Gamero stands out not just as a breakdancer but as a shining example of determination and dedication. Kent believes that the commitment Gamero brings to her daily routine is truly impressive.
“This is my first year having her on the team, and I’ve noticed that Elizabeth is an integral part of multiple organizations,” Kent said. “From band to athletics to dance, she is always involved and never misses a beat. It’s admirable to see someone so motivated to do everything they want and do it well.”
This motivation is shown through her practices and performances. Looking back, her coach recalls Gamero’s audition from the previous year.
“I witnessed tremendous growth from her 2023 audition to her 2024 audition,” Kent said. “Breakdancing requires immense athleticism and mental strength, and Elizabeth demonstrates this exceptionally well.”
Through it all, Gamero has learned the value of time management, communication and confidence, but most importantly, hard work.
“Everything that I do is hard work. It’s not talent; it’s not a gift. It’s just pure hard work.”
