“It all started in 2020. That’s when I wanted to take all of my years of cooking at home and turn them into a business and fund my entrepreneurial desires. I’m self taught. I started [baking] at home. Originally it was because I liked to watch the food network channel on TV. my sister [and I] would have competitions at home, so that’s when I started to get positive reinforcement through cooking. So I started [my] bakery.
[The business] is based on deliveries for parties and business events. We focus on the quality of [the baked goods]. We use brands that are seed oil free. It’s pretty high quality ingredients.
The main challenge is how you can market yourself. You have something you want to offer, but how are you gonna get people to see you and make a buyer interested in whatever you’re offering? We use social media for marketing. People say “Oh, I saw that cookie you posted and I wanted to try that because we have a party coming up.” They just send me a text and I can coordinate the delivery.
At the beginning, I sometimes messed up whole batches of [desserts]. It would take hours to restart, so I’d be up at 2am to make the delivery [the next morning].
One of the main things that I like to promote in my bakery is the people. Having that personal story to share with all of your customers is very important.[Now,] I can make anywhere from $1000 to $2000 per month selling baked goods.
Another challenge is having a system where I have to have steps to follow so that each time [customers] get the same high quality experience. There [are] no excuses [to maintain] responsibility.
I didn’t wait [to finish] my degree or any course [before] actually taking action. After being a senior my high school years of having a business will later turn into degrees. When I’m applying for colleges, [my business will]definitely [be] a central central point of my [college] essay.
Ultimately, I would encourage anyone that’s young to not place your age as a limiting factor. If you have a certain skill, use that to your advantage. At the end of the day, the experience is what matters.”
