“I am one of the dance officers this competition season, meaning I have to perform three extra dances on top of the three varsity dances. With this big commitment, I hope to grow and improve my technique and continue practicing new skills.
In competition, officer-only dances are typically more technical and [are judged on] a higher standard. Because of this pressure, I want to become a stronger dancer so [that] I am more comfortable doing high-stakes performances.
In preparation for the upcoming season, I watch the videos of our dances outside of practice looking for what can be improved. I work at a dance studio on Sundays, so I practice independently when I have extra time between teaching classes.
On top of that, with my role as the major, it will feel a little different to help lead the team rather than simply being a member. It’s going to feel nostalgic thinking about my first competition as a Belle in my first year compared to my last one at the end of February.
This season is more special because this will be the last time I compete in dance as a senior. In my first year as a Belle, I was still learning and getting used to competition jitters. With years of experience, I can control and channel my emotions into my art.
I am ready to have a successful competition season this year, making new memories that will last a lifetime with my fellow Belles, who have become my [like my] sisters.”
