“I played ultimate frisbee for the first time in the spring semester of my junior year, but I didn’t start to take it seriously until last winter break.
I credit Jacob Lee for welcoming me into the Frisbee community. Jacob is a very nice, warm guy, and I remember that I used to ask him when there would be casual Frisbee scrimmages.
In the first pick-up game that I played in, Jacob scored off of my ‘greatest,’ which is when an extremely rare highlight play where a player jumps from in-bounds to catch the disc while moving out of bounds, then throws it back in-bounds before landing out of bounds.
I’m not one of the original players that began the Frisbee community at Bellaire, but I was able to carve out a role as one of the team’s ‘handlers’, which is a position on a team that is mostly responsible for facilitating movement of the disc downfield.
Handlers are usually the best throwers on any given team. I credit my dad, my first throwing partner, for helping me drastically improve my throwing ability.
On the field, I’d describe myself as a hyperactive athlete and teammate. I disrupt opponents with my speed while bringing energy and a loud voice on the sidelines.
To me, playing together and united is more important than our skills on the field, so I try to keep everyone on the same page and bring the best out of my teammates whenever I can.
In January, around half of us decided to make Ultimate Frisbee a commitment. We had our first ‘practice,’ and ten players showed up. Since then, we’ve met every Wednesday after school and Sunday afternoon to run drills and scrimmages.
Thanks to the generous Mr. French for funding us, our first and only big experience together as a team was playing in the Houston Ultimate Community Youth Tournament, March 1-2, 2025.
Through ten hours of Frisbee across Saturday and Sunday, my legs were incredibly sore, and it took me at least a week to fully recover. We went 3-3, but we fought hard every game, and every single one of our wins was earned through double game point, or ‘universe point.’ Words could not describe all the memories that we shared together that weekend.
Since the tournament, we’ve held weekly practices in the courtyard. Though we suffered a loss to St. Thomas, we finished our year with a 15-12 win over our alumni, who were led by some players on TAMU’s ultimate frisbee team.
Now that I’m graduating, I’m super glad that I picked up Ultimate Frisbee in my senior year. The support I’ve gained from teammates, coaches and opponents has given me confidence to try out for a spot on Brown’s Brownian Motion Ultimate Frisbee team.
As long as there’s a will, there’s a way.”
