On Wednesday, Oct. 2, the annual college fair attracted numerous students and parents from the Houston area. More than 200 college and universities were represented at the fair. To accommodate this large number, the science conference center was effectively utilized this year in addition to the cafeteria and multipurpose room. Representatives included admission officers and alumni, all eager to talk with the students arriving at their individual information booths. Senior Laura Zhang, a college fair committee chairman, explains the purpose of the event.
“Most people that come to the college fair want to get information that they wouldn’t be able to get through just looking at the admissions website,” Zhang said. “I think the college representatives were very helpful in enlightening students about the application process to their prospective schools.”
The college fair is a great resource for students of all grade levels. While seniors are more focused on making their final selections, students from lower grades have time and liberty to “shop” for the right college. Sophomore Chandana Golla describes what she looks for in a college.
“I want to be pre-med, so I liked the programs that offered strong sciences,” Golla said. “I really want to go to a school with a quarter system, so I can learn more and be able to take more classes that I like.”
Students were given bags from Belden’s to conveniently carry flyers, brochures, and other promotional material received from college representatives. Other sponsors present at the fair included test preparation companies and college mentoring programs, exposing students to available resources and opportunities that may aid in their college-bound paths.
