Cancer Awareness Club hosts successful luncheon

Dec 12, 2014

The annual Cancer Awareness Club luncheon was held on October 27, 2014 in the multipurpose room during lunch. The luncheon offered three types of pasta from Café Express, salad, bread, a drink and pink frosted cupcakes to honor Breast Cancer Awareness month. The emotions dancers served as the entertainment for the luncheon as people walked in to get their food. President of the club senior Annie Shen learned a lot from the club’s luncheon her freshman year which served food from Giuliani’s that ended up being cold and not that tasty. Shen describes the effort that went into planning this year’s luncheon.

“Honestly, planning a luncheon was a lot of work,” Shen said. “I had stayed up late the night before the luncheon to make sure that I didn’t forget anything. To see how well the luncheon went this year was worth all the sleep and energy that I lost. But it wasn’t just me, the rest of the club also helped tremendously. It was how each and every member dedicated their time and energy to this event that brought it all together. As long as you put your mind to it, nothing is impossible.”

The luncheon was a success as the club earned over $700 with a net profit of $400. Senior Lawrence Chen helped serve food during the luncheon. Chen has been in the club for years and recounts his reasons for joining the club and volunteering at the luncheon.

“A bunch of my friends were in the club and I wanted to hang out with them,” Chen said. “Breast cancer is prevalent in most people’s lives. Most people know at least one person who has breast cancer. I wanted to help make a difference and help raise awareness. The luncheon was fairly successful. We attracted many people to our luncheon and made some profit. The Emotions dancers didn’t really make much of a difference to whether people bought tickets or not because you could walk in and watch whether or not you paid. The food was pretty good.”
