New School Clubs: Feminist Club
Feminism is a touchy topic. It has a negative connotation and people usually think of angry women when they hear the word. The Feminist Club is here to educate the people of the school about the facts of what feminism actually is.
The leaders of the club were very organized and were very excited about the beginning of the club. Senior, Amanda Garcia and Beyoncé both define Feminism as, “The belief in the social, political, and economical equality of the sexes.”
Junior Isabelle Schmidt, attending the first meeting, saw the posters in the hallway and immediately wanted to be involved in the club.
“I’ve always wanted to start a feminist club at the school,” Schmidt said. “The day before posters started going up my friends and I went to the main office to see how we could start a club. When I heard about it starting I was really excited.”
Schmidt went the meeting in room 337 and arrived to full house. There was no room for people to sit and people were standing outside of the door.
“I didn’t think there would be as many people as there were,” Schmidt said. “All week I had heard lots of people talk about the club, but not as many say they were actually going to come. When my friends and I saw the line down the hallway to get inside the room we were all really surprised.”
One of the club starters, Amanda Garcia, senior, was also very surprised at the big turn out, but was glad they were there.
“I really didn’t think all of those people were going to show up. I’ve been wanting to start this club for so long and the fact that so many people wanted to be involved made me so happy!”
The Feminist Club wants show people that Feminism is about everyone becoming equal, including women and men of all sexualities, races, and backgrounds.
