Sophomore Shivam Nayyar and senior Lalit Chinasumala “dap” each other up with pink and orange Holi powder. Junior Sanjana Kharel joins the handshake by throwing blue powder before chasing her friends around for the celebration.

Hindi National Honor Society and South Asian Student Association hosted a Holi Celebration at Karl Young Park yesterday. Members sold traditional snacks and powder color to fundraise for future club events and t-shirts.

Junior and secretary Adi Upadhyaya said he enjoyed celebrating Holi and its traditions.

“For Holi, you pour natural, nontoxic, flower based powder colors on each other and celebrate with sweet Indian food because one of the gods from our mythology defeated a dark, bad guy,” Upadhyaya said. “I had a lot of fun even though we had some difficulties setting up at the beginning and getting more people to come.”

Sophomore Sebastian Nguyen biked 15 miles to the park to celebrate with his friends.

“I’m colorblind but I could see all these colors vividly and it was really festive and messy,” Nguyen said. “I’ve been to a color run event in middle school so it brought back a lot of memories. I really enjoyed it but I wish more people attended.”

Junior Sanjana Kharel is a returning celebrator of the Holi festival.

“I thought it was a very interactive and fun event,” Kharel said. “In previous years, we usually celebrated Holi by doing performances on stage after school. It was really nice to be able to go to the park in nice weather to get people together and have fun.”
