HISD’s Literacy and Social Studies Curriculum Professional Development Department hosted its first annual Loving Lit for Life Literacy Conference on Feb. 10 at Bellaire High School. The event was coordinated by LaSondra Adigun, K-12 director for professional development: literacy and social studies.
“As a person of influence in our district, I decided to use my experiences to create an environment that enabled teachers, administrators and literacy leaders to gain a deeper understanding of resources available, explore culturally relevant and rigorous best practices, engage in conversations to further our understanding of genius and joy in 21st Century classrooms and spotlight students, leaders, schools and community organizations that exemplify this work,” Adigun said.
The event consisted of a keynote speech from Dr. Ingrid Haynes of the National Literacy Institute, breakout sessions of concurrent presentations, a literacy leaders panel with three Bellaire High School students as well as a writer’s workshop with poet Van G. Garrett.
