Coed Volleyball Club had its first practice of the year on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Over 30 students, new and old, attended the practice.
President and junior Jacob Schwartz said he was excited about the new year for the club.
“I’m really glad about the new season,” Schwartz said. “The goal of the club is really just to let people come play volleyball who aren’t on a team, just for fun, and I feel like we’re really doing that, letting people casually play. “
Social chair and junior Elle Lacson hopes to experiment this year with the new members.
“I’m really excited to see new people experimenting with volleyball positions and being able to play the game, because we all love volleyball,” Lacson said. “It’s really amazing to just see so many different people come out and play.”
Junior Nolan Liu started playing coed volleyball because it was a team sport unlike his school sport, tennis.
“[In tennis] you don’t really get all the recognition, but when you’re playing volleyball, there’s more attention to you, and there’s a lot more players, which makes it fun,” he said.
The first open gym practice consisted of two courts, which players practiced using a king-of-the hill system, a game in which each player attempts to stay on court by winning consecutive matches in a row. Junior Quang Nguyen thought it was “very awesome and very creative.”
Because the club is coed, it not only promotes volleyball but gives the opportunity to specifically men to play as well. Junior member Emma Lacson “thinks it’s great, because [she] knows a lot of guys that don’t get to play for real teams, so they’re looking to play at school.”
“We currently only have a girls’ volleyball team, so guys aren’t able to play on a team, and so because there is a coed club, they actually get the opportunity to play,” Lacson said.
