The National Honor Society met on Sept. 4 to inform new and returning members of current events.
With Cardinal Hour being shortened this year, student leadership had to adjust their schedule to be mindful of everyone’s time.
Historian Amy Liu “We were anticipating it [the meeting] lasting all of lunch, but it didn’t,” Liu said. ”It went smoother than expected,” said Historian Amy Liu.
Junior chapter member Vishwa Anandu attended the meeting. Anandu joined NHS because he is committed to serving his community and meeting other members with similar goals.
“The NHS meeting, as expected, was very professional and informative. It was fun to see everyone together after summer break,” Anandu said.
During the meeting, NHS officers outlined their goals for the next few months. Co-adviser Jennifer Kuhleman spoke on new initiatives to “instill a sense of pride in our campus.”
“We have programs with regards to positive campus culture, one of which was a responsible use of social media, and campus beautification,” Kuhleman said. “We’ve [also] undertaken a personal project to maintain the Alumni Garden.”
NHS officers also discussed the submission of volunteering hours, upcoming volunteering events, junior officer positions and tutoring.
“NHS has planned volunteering events for the West University and Condit Elementary Schools’ Boo Bashes,” Anandu said.
Anandu has volunteered to help clean up invasive weeds in the Alumni Garden and looks forward to volunteering at several more events throughout the year.
NHS strives to create opportunities for its chapter members to help their community and collaborate.
“The large service projects where I get to see chapter members who may not be close friends outside of NHS build relationships within the chapter, that’s my favorite part,” Kuhleman said.
The National Honor Society will meet on Oct. 2. Upcoming volunteer events include the Friends of Bellaire Library Book Sale on Oct. 5 and the Longfellow Elementary Fall Festival on Oct. 25.
