The Student Council held its annual Trivia Night on Nov. 14 in the auditorium from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The event, nine years running, marks STUCO’s second year collaborating with Quiz Bowl.
A total of 11 teams competed in the event, including a team of the three AP World History teachers – Jennifer Kuhleman, Justin Cothran and Alan Heise, plus Algebra 1 teacher Johnston French. Student Council officers asked the teams questions from eight different categories: arts and music, sports, math, science, literature, school spirit, history and pop culture.
The event also included power-ups, such as phoning in a friend, saying no to another team’s power-up, giving two answers at the same time and, a popular choice, forcing an opponent to hold a plank.
Senior and STUCO vice president Luke Wang helped facilitate the event.
“If you answer three questions correctly in a row, you can choose one person from an opposing team to plank [in] the middle of the stage for two rounds,” Wang said. “I think this power-up was abused so many times in this event.”
Wang views Trivia Night as a community event where students can challenge themselves and have fun.
“My favorite part of this event is when the question is asked and all the teams are dialed in, trying to answer these questions,” Wang said. “Everyone’s focused, and it’s even better when the audience is also keyed into the game. A second part that’s also my favorite is seeing the teachers there, also immersed in this competitive atmosphere.”
Sophomore Wesley George returned to Trivia Night after attending last year.
“I came to Trivia Night for extra credit, but also because it was quite entertaining,” George said.
George views spectating as a fun way to learn cool facts that he probably wouldn’t have learned otherwise.
“I think it was entertaining to watch because of all the fun answers, competitive energy and the people I got to root for,” George said.
The night ended in a three-way tie for first place. The teams had to answer a series of questions in an impromptu lightning round to determine the true champions. The team Charlie’s Fortnite Squad secured first place, with Costco Guys coming in second and the Goon Squad in third.
Senior Shreyas Sinha was a member of the first place team, along with teammates Weston Benner, Andrew Sazykin and Dylan Wong.
“As a competitor, it was really exciting,” Sinha said. “It was great to see that at any one point, I had the chance to win or lose like a hundred dollars.”
