Medical Club collaborated with the Red Cross Club to host a cardiopulmonary resuscitation emergency training demonstration and Automated External Defibrillator simulation in room 2607 on Jan. 31.
Students participated in the CPR demonstration with James Browning, a certified CPR instructor, using mannequins and practice AEDs.
“Browning brought physical mannequins so that students could test [CPR and AED demonstrations] with it, and the experience was a very hands-on activity,” Medical Club officer and junior Miranda Wang said. “[The demonstration] was really engaging, especially for the different club members to be able to physically do things rather than just listening to his lecture – they actually got to physically do something that they can learn through.”
CPR is an emergency procedure necessary in the medical field that combines 30 chest compressions with rescue breaths, breaths blown into a person’s mouth to supply oxygen, to maintain the oxygen supply to the brain when someone’s heart has stopped. Timely CPR can help boost a person’s chances of survival, making it vital in situations like cardiac arrest.
“I would say that it’s really educational, fun and interactive,” freshman Ella Naglis said. “I think it was very helpful, because I know how to perform CPR now. The most exciting part was seeing the volunteers perform CPR on the dummies. It was really interesting to watch. I do think that I will come to future Medical Club meetings, because I think it was really cool and it’s super interactive. I learned a lot and want to continue to learn about medical stuff.”
Students in attendance learned more about getting involved in the community through demonstrations of emergency preparedness by a lifeguard instructor.
“Our club has a lot of opportunities,” Wang said. “Not only can you learn about different fields of medicine, but you can also do research yourself, join the club and learn about all our resources.”
