Over 30 students discussed various books such as “Sunrise of the Reaping” by Suzanne Collins and “The Power” by Naomi Alderman over cups of tea during a reading party collaboration between Tea Society and W.R.I.T.E. Club in room 1609 on March 18.
Members from both clubs took turns talking about books they had read recently over a microphone. They discussed several genres of books, including dystopian, science fiction and nonfiction novels.
“It was interesting to see all the different genres and forms of books the Bellaire community was reading,” W.R.I.T.E. Club vice president and junior David Fang said. “Other members talked about ‘The Power,’ which they were reading for AP Literature about a fantastical setting in which a matriarchal hierarchy reigns over society.”
Afterward, the clubs served breakfast tea, strawberry tea and green tea with sugar.
“It was chaotic, but I’d say we did a pretty good job controlling it on our end,” Tea Society president and sophomore Iris Yeh said. “Overall, the environment was inviting and fun for potential members.”
Officers from both clubs met a week before to discuss what tea they would bring and planned activities.
“W.R.I.T.E. Club reached out to us first during Club Jamboree,” Yeh said. “Since tea and literature go hand-in-hand, we exchanged numbers, and the rest is history.”
Sophomore Shivali Sinha was one of many who discussed their recent readings during the reading party.
“One of the books I discussed was the latest Hunger Games prequel that came out later that day,” Sinha said. “I was really excited because [Suzanne Collins’s] books are usually good.”
Beyond the simple nature of book discussions, W.R.I.T.E. Club looks to further the interest of Bellaire High School students in literature.
“Our meeting was intended to promote a love for both literature and tea,” Fang said. “This was such a great opportunity to share our mission and explore our passions in the essence of community.”
