The Black Student Association came together to commemorate Black culture at their game day meeting on April 3 over a game of CultureTags.
Senior and Club President Taylor McCullar projected a card with an acronym for slang common in Black culture (IKYL meaning, “I know you lyin,’” for example). Participants then guessed what the acronym stood for.
As BSA’s second game day meeting of the school year, McCullar found CultureTags in particular to be significant because it brought together Black people and those that grew up around Black culture.
“I think games like CultureTags are important because it is a game specifically for Black people to relate and bond over,” McCullar said.
As the school year comes to an end, McCullar plans for the BSA to host “one more good event” to “bring as many people in [to the club] as possible.”
“I want people to remember BSA as a fun club that they want to still be a part of next year,” McCullar said.
Senior and member Asthin Jones participated in the game day meeting because she wanted to be around “positive energy” and have fun.
“[CultureTags] gets everyone laughing, thinking hard and connecting through our shared culture,” Jones said. “I definitely think schools should have more initiatives that celebrate Black culture. For African American students, it gives a real sense of pride and belonging knowing their culture is seen, respected and appreciated.”
