To show appreciation for faculty and staff, Latin Revolution, Spanish Club and LULAC Club organized a free breakfast on Main Street on March 28 from 6:45 to 8:30 a.m..
Various clubs take turns hosting this free breakfast monthly, with this breakfast serving around 200 staff members.
Ester Galo, who teaches Native Speaker Spanish, AP Spanish 4, IB Spanish SL and HL, sponsors LSL club and was the main planner of the event.
“Personally, as a teacher, I think this is a great opportunity to come in during the morning and be excited to get a treat, feel valued and feel connected to our clubs and organizations,” Galo said.
Throughout Galo’s experience at four different schools in her teaching career, Bellaire is the first school to have a free staff-and-faculty-breakfast.
“I’ve never worked at a school where clubs and organizations would give out once-a-month breakfasts except at Bellaire,” Galo said. “I think it’s important because it brings that sense of community.”
Galo wasn't alone in preparing the event – senior and President of LSL Club Jasmine Garcia also helped organize the breakfast by securing a discount for and buying breakfast tacos, fruit, orange juice, coffee and pastries.
“I went with [Galo] to HEB to pick out what breakfast items to give to the teachers,” Garcia said. “I also helped with getting them a discount, since I work at HEB.”
Gregory Switzer, Theory of Knowledge teacher, received a bacon-and-egg breakfast taco from LSL Club.
“It was excellent,” Switzer said. “They were so friendly, they wanted to be nice to me. I loved the way they flagged me down when I was on my way to my classroom and offered me an abundance of possible breakfasts.”
As a senior, this was the fourth and last free breakfast Garcia will ever host. She was “glad” to have had the opportunity to give back.
“I think it's important because it's a reminder to teachers that we're here for them, and even if it's something small, we like to do stuff for them,” Garcia said. “It shows how our club likes to give to teachers because we know how much they give to the school and we just wanted to give them something back.”
