University of Missouri Admissions Representative Isabelle Shaver visited Bellaire in LGI 2 during periods three and four to answer questions about admissions and the different opportunities Mizzou offers on Monday.
Mizzou is located in Columbia, Missouri, and offers over 300 degree programs, including pre-professional programs such as pre-law and pre-med. With an acceptance rate of 78%, Mizzou undergraduate students total approximately 24,000.
“We still do have an 18 to 1 student/faculty ratio, and an average class size of about 32 students,” Shaver said. “So even with overly large classes, you are still getting development [in learning].”
According to Shaver, while there are still larger lecture style classrooms for freshman year classes, Mizzou offers small group time later to ask questions of professors and teaching assistants. In freshman year, Mizzou offers an exploring major for freshmen to consider their options before deciding.
“You do have up to two years to make your decision,” Shaver said. “Now our freshman do change their major about three times because we have no impacted majors, which means that you don’t have to have any experience coming into freshman year to apply into any major.”
Mizzou is a Division I school in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) of the NCAA, and offers 20 Division I athletic programs and a variety of activities like cycling classes, rec sports and club sports for students to participate in. The surrounding area of Columbia, the fourth largest city in Missouri, has 75 trails off campus per-person and 19 different music venues across the city.
“We have 18 NCAA Division I teams on campus,” Shaver said. “We’re actually the only SEC school that offers [ticket packages] and gives you a home game ticket to all 18 of those Division I games.”
Mizzou’s applications opened Oct. 1 and are open throughout the year. Admissions are rolling at Mizzou and students receive their results within two to four weeks. Mizzou uses core GPA including grades from English, math, science, social studies and foreign language as a part of their application process. Currently, Mizzou is test optional.
