Houston Christian University Assistant Director of Freshman Admissions Ja’Lynn Manson visited Bellaire during Cardinal Hour in Room 1304 to discuss academic development and student life on Oct. 6.
Offering more than 100 majors and degree programs, HCU focuses on their students’ academics and professional skills, providing an opportunity for students to pursue their careers and excel in them. HCU emphasized the importance of building great relationships with others and utilizing skills learned in the real world.
“We want to give you the basic foundations of everything you need to know before you graduate,” Manson said. “We’re not just teaching you information, but we’re teaching you how to walk in that information.”
Alongside rigorous academics and study life, HCU also highlighted their Christian faith and community commitment, requiring students to obtain 80 community and life worship credits before they graduate.
“You don’t have to worry about the exam that’s coming up, and you don’t have to worry about that lab assignment that you were supposed to [do] last night,” Manson said. “You actually get to just have a moment where you get to worship with your fellow Huskies.”
HCU is currently test-optional, and scholarships are offered based on your unweighted GPA. Scholarships can range from $16,000 to $24,000 per year for incoming freshmen. HCU freshmen can live at home if they live within 50 miles or live within the resident houses on campus.
In addition to education, HCU prioritizes a social life for its students, housing two museums, five sports fields and two different dining halls on campus. A walking tour is also available on campus for anyone who would like to check out the nature around HCU, or you can schedule a campus tour led by Husky Ambassadors on the HCU website.
“We don’t want you to just come to school and go home,” Manson said. “No, have fun. Get involved with some organizations. Go explore the world. We have groups that literally just go around Houston and try different restaurants. We do that because we want you.”
