Dartmouth College’s admissions officer Carolyn Yee visited Bellaire in Charlie’s Cottage on Monday. Yee discussed college life with juniors and seniors and touched on everything the school has to offer, including study abroad and research opportunities.
Yee described the options students have to complete their required 35 classes for graduation. Dartmouth gives students the chance to have two or even three majors, or to combine them into a modified major.
“I moved my sophomore summer break to my junior spring, so my junior spring and summer were back-to-back breaks,” Yee said. “This gives you a real competitive edge when you’re applying for internships or job opportunities. I had six months off in total where I got to do multiple internships, visit my family and travel a little bit before heading back to school.”
The university offers the D-plan, a Dartmouth-unique system where students are able to customize their school calendar and arrange their classes around the quarters they want to attend school and choose when they want to take a break.
The college provides students with multiple study-abroad opportunities. These include trips through their Language program, the Domestic Study-Abroad program, and the Foreign Study program, where students can study within a department but in a different country. Around 50% of Dartmouth students study abroad at least once, compared to the national average of 1%, according to the National Association of Foreign Student Advisors (NAFSA).
“I think one of the great things about Dartmouth is [that] we offer so many research opportunities,” Yee said. “You don’t have to do research just for having said you did it, because [through Dartmouth’s research programs], you can kind of figure out what you actually want to do [in the future] and really pursue that.”
Noted by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education®, Dartmouth is considered an R1 research university. The college spends over $360 million on research, with 100 doctorates produced in multiple programs ranging from biomedical sciences to engineering.
