Save the Children kicked off their first meeting of the month on Oct. 9 in Room 2704. The meeting was centered around a goal of creating at least 70 literacy kits to serve unprivileged children.
The assembly table was the main point of the meeting, consisting of everything students could need to create a kit. Attendees were instructed to grab a bag, add two books and fill it with various trinkets that children love. Some trinkets included Pop-its, mini stuffed animals, notebooks, gel pens and Save the Children (STC) branded seeds and stickers.
Vice president and junior Nisha Thukral said she was really excited to see how these kits will affect the underserved community.
“We hope that these literacy kits create a positive experience with reading so that kids start enjoying reading now, allowing them to enjoy reading far into the future,” Thukral said. “We also hope these kits serve as the foundation for literacy and connect reading to something fun.”
Member and sophomore Alaya Gaj said she enjoyed making the literacy kits and can’t wait for the next meeting.
“I’m really passionate about helping kids and making sure that they get sufficient resources to become better readers,” Gaj said. “I am excited to see what the next meeting holds.”
