On Aug. 29, the Bellaire varsity football team lost 52-27 against Elkins High School in the first game of the 2014 season.

The fans present at Mercer Stadium burst into a roar as Elkins started off the game with a fast touchdown that caught the defense off guard and put the Knights on a 7-0 lead. The Bellaire team struggled to find their stride as little mistakes from the offense caused the team to lose the momentum they were gaining.

With the team struggling to get back up, it was up to the quarterback to pick up the team and help lead them to victory. Quarterback Trevon Smith, senior, capitalized in a decisive matter with two skilful spin moves that made two defensive attempts at a sack seem like child’s play.

The offense was no slouch as Running back Tavion Palmers, junior, plowed his way through the opposing defense getting the team closer and closer to a touchdown.  It seemed as though the Cards were on the right path, but an offensive fumble ended the team’s possession. The second half of the game seemed promising as Bellaire went into the half with more momentum than their opponent.

Bellaire continued to have control of the game at the start of the second half with impressive running plays from the Bellaire offense which came out of the locker room with momentum.

The rest of the game was filled with players having trouble finding holes in the Elkins defense. The Bellaire team continued to add more and more running and passing yards to their team’s statistics but were unable to score.

Bellaire will look to rebound from the tough loss in their next game against La Porte at 7:00 pm at Butler on Saturday, September 6.
