The Cardinals’ varsity football team left Delmar Stadium in a 35-0 win, forcing a shutout against the Sam Houston Tigers on Sept. 28. In their first district game, the Cardinals came out with a 1-0 record to start off the district season and moved up to a 3-2 record for the overall year. The team scored five touchdowns led by quarterback Will Hazen, running back freshman Jake Brasington and wide receivers Tony Miller and Cameron Johnson.
After starting running back, junior Chance Diebner, injured his shoulder, Brasington came into the game and was running behind Hazen’s offensive line. Within the first quarter, he scored the first touchdown for the first six points of the district season.
“[I’m] really happy we won,” Hazen said. “Of course there were some things we could’ve done better because you’re not always going to play a perfect game, but it was fun.”
Throwing for four touchdowns and 193 passing yards, Hazen said there was definitely more pressure because playing in front of a big crowd makes the big plays “so much more fun.”
“We really just came out and took care of business. It was really fun, making big plays like that,” Hazen said. “Everyone there wanted to see us win the way we did. I just go out there and do what I do. I look for the open guy, you know.”
Hazen threw three touchdowns to his primary target Miller across the second and third quarters.
“I felt like I played pretty good, so it was a good game for me,” Miller said. “Of course, you got to win the homecoming game.”
Racking up over 100 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns, Miller made a “big impact” on the game, according to Hazen.
“I like hearing the student section – it kind of turns me up a little bit so it felt nice hearing that,” Miller said. “Just go out there and have fun, you know.“
