The Lady Cardinals’ shot at district championship remains alive after an overwhelming victory against Westside.
On Friday, Jan. 17, varsity girls’ basketball was in control against Westside, winning 60-33. This game ended Bellaire’s two-year losing streak to Westside in district play and sparked a flame of new possibilities.
“The game was probably the most important one we played all season because of our loss to Lamar,” junior power forward Maisie Moncrief said. “If we lost to Westside, they would have taken the district championship.”
Bellaire snagged an early lead, scoring 34 points by halftime. Westside trailed by 15 points. The Lady Cardinals used halftime to come together and discuss their strategy to stay in the lead.
“Coach really emphasized rebounds during halftime,” junior point guard Indiana Pak said. “He also told us to not let our foot off the gas since we have the tendency to get comfortable after the first quarter.”
Bellaire tightened its defense in the second half, holding Westside to 14 points.
“I feel like the team did really well rebounding and capitalizing on their mistakes.” senior guard Christine Dimacali said.
Dimacali returned for her third non-consecutive basketball season after missing her junior year due to scheduling conflicts with soccer.
“It was my first game back to basketball, and I performed very well,” Dimacali said. “I loved playing with all these girls.”
The girls will face Heights High School on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 6:45 p.m. With four games remaining in the season, each win gets the Lady Cards closer to district champs.
