As a Texans fan, I’ve been through a lot. I still shudder when I hear Bill O’Brien’s name, shake my head when I see a Davis Mills jersey, and don’t even get me started on the DeAndre Hopkins “trade.”
I thought that we were past all that, that C.J. Stroud and DeMeco Ryans were starting a new era of Texans football that might even get us our first Super Bowl appearance.

But this season has been the exact opposite. Instead of starting off strong against teams that they breezed past last year, they lost their first three games before they got any wins on the board.
Now at 2-3 for the season, they sit at 22nd in total yards and 20th in points per game. While their defense has been a bright spot, their record shows that it can’t make up for poor offense.
In all of their losses, there have been some key areas to focus on. In the last NFL draft, the Texans needed one thing: an offensive line. Stroud was under too much pressure, getting sacked the fourth most out of every NFL team.
But instead of focusing on building an offensive line after All-Pro offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil left, they only drafted one offensive lineman, Aireontae Ersery, and the moves they made over the offseason secured depth, not talent. Tunsil is easily one of the best linemen in the league, and the effort to replace him fell short.
DeMeco Ryans loves a strong defense, which is fair: a good defense can be the difference in tight games. However, it doesn’t make up for neglecting the offense.
While their wins against the Ravens and Titans seem like a bright point, they prove that the Texans don’t have the capabilities to win big games. It doesn’t matter if they can beat two teams who can’t win games of their own. Those wins ultimately came down to poor playing and mistakes from those teams, not the Texans.
So what will the rest of the season look like? Here are my predictions for the rest of the season:
Loss at Seattle: This will be a close game, as a Seattle offense with the fifth most points faces a strong Houston defense. However, Seattle will win the game.
Loss vs. San Francisco: The 49ers have started the season at a strong 4-1, and the Texans don’t look like a team the 49ers will have trouble with.
Win vs. Denver: Denver looks powerful at 3-2 with losses against better teams, but Stroud beat them last year, and a Texans’ upset doesn’t seem too far out of reach.
Loss vs. Jacksonville: The Jaguars have played surprisingly well these first couple weeks, sitting second in the division at 4-1, and it wouldn’t be shocking for them to continue this trend.
Win at Tennessee: The Titans just aren’t playing well, with their only win coming from pure luck. If the Texans lose this game, there’s not a team they can beat.
Loss vs. Buffalo: 4-1 and a top contender for the Super Bowl, Buffalo should easily win this game.
Loss at Indianapolis: After a three-week streak of not even punting the ball, the Colts look good. It wouldn’t be surprising if they win against the Texans.
Win at Kansas City: The Chiefs are looking about as good as the Texans right now, and the Texans proved they can win against teams on the decline after their win at Baltimore.
Loss vs. Arizona: After the worst loss of the season against Tennessee, I think that the Cardinals will be able to turn their season around, or at least enough to beat the Texans.
Win vs. Las Vegas: Even though the Raiders have one of the best coaches in the league, they are still playing terribly. This should be an easy win for the Texans.
Loss at LAC: The Chargers have had incredible individual performances like Omarion Hampton and Quentin Johnston; while it might not be enough to win arguably the most competitive division in the AFC, it’s enough to beat the Texans.
Loss vs. Indianapolis: Unless the Colts have already clinched the division, the Texans will lose this game.
These predictions have the Texans finishing the year 6-11, but it doesn’t mean that a playoff season is impossible. Luck could change, the Texans might trade for players they need, or the strong defense could take them to a Mike Tomlin-style wild card.
However, a lack of focus on building their offensive line and an overemphasis on the defense will result in another disappointing season.

Great analysis Ethan! Can’t wait to see how the predictions play out.
