Meet Meet Fresh: one of our favorite places for dessert on any day of the year.
This restaurant has a dessert for every season, whether you are looking for a nice and icy treat to cool off from the Houston heat or trying to warm yourself up from the spontaneous cool fronts of fall with a hot dessert soup, this place will satisfy all your sweet, and not so sweet, cravings.
Here are some of the most popular dishes and recommendations you should try if you ever go to Meet Fresh.
Icy Grass Jelly Signature:
McKenzie’s rating: 9.8/10
Holy moly. If I could sum up Meet Fresh in one dessert, it’s this one. The first time I tried Meet Fresh was in 2019 in New York City, and I still remember trying this. I was blown away. No wonder why this is one of their signature dishes.
The herbal grass jelly shaved ice mixed with the intense flavor of the classic grass jelly and chewiness of the taro mochi balls, with Meet Fresh’s signature coffee creamer is a combo of flavors unlike any other. As a huge herbal grass jelly fan, this dish is right up my alley; it’s not too sweet but has enough sweetness to make it feel like a dessert. Every time I go into Meet Fresh, this dish is my go-to order. Or, if I’m feeling extra sweet that day, I get a side of condensed milk to drizzle on top of the dish.
Serena’s rating: 8/10
Ever since I first tried it in ninth grade, I’ve loved grass jelly. Its unique flavor is impossible to describe to those who’ve never had it before, but I find it hard to imagine anyone would dislike it. The taro balls were perfectly chewy and their faint taste balanced well with the sweetness of the rest of the dessert. This dish was the perfect refreshing dessert to cleanse your palate.
Audrey’s rating: 7.5/10
Grass jelly is not my go-to topping for any dessert and it’s one of those unique flavors that never quite stuck with me as well as boba did (sorry Serena). However, I have to admit that Meet Fresh created a tasty dessert, pairing the jelly with condensed milk, shaved ice and taro balls.
In my opinion, grass jelly does not have a strong taste on its own. By itself, it has a very muted flavor with the slightest hint of sweetness. But in Meet Fresh’s Ice Grass Jelly Signature, it elevated the flavor profiles of the other ingredients. I also loved the consistency of the taro balls — chewy but not to the point of chewing until my jaw hurt. Overall, it’s a very strong dish. Even though it might not be my first choice, it’s a great dessert that’s light and refreshing, and one that I’d be open to trying again!
Mini Q Coco Sago Drink:
McKenzie’s rating: 5.4/10
This drink was delicious, don’t get me wrong, but there was something off about it. I enjoy Asian coconut desserts, especially ones with sago and mochi, but the texture of this drink was something that I could not get past.
The drink was basically a dessert bowl in a cup. There was taro paste, something I typically enjoy, and coconut milk, which I usually find delicious. However, the coconut milk seemed significantly watered down, and there was only a faint taste of the actual coconut.
It felt like I was drinking water, taro paste, mini q and sago. But beyond that, this drink is pretty average. It’s something I enjoyed but would not get again.
Fluffy Green Tea:
Audrey’s rating: 8/10
I have tried my fair share of green teas, and Meet Fresh’s Fluffy Green Tea certainly did not disappoint. Its signature specialty is the whipped cream layer dolloped onto the top of the tea, creating a perfect little cloud that floats above the ice.
The base of the drink, the tea itself, was as textbook as green teas come. It’s almost bitter yet the faint aftertaste balanced perfectly with the sweet, cheesy foam poured over it. What surprised me was how the drink was not overly sweet but still managed to keep me coming back for more.
One thing I do advise is not to take a sip of the foam directly, as it can be a bit overpowering without any tea. I recommend mixing the drink until it becomes milky to ensure you get the best flavor combination in every sip! If you’re looking to add a little spice to your average iced green tea, this drink is made for you.
Chocolate Chip Egg Waffle:
Serena’s rating: 8/10
Although this dessert is not exactly the signature of Meet Fresh, I would still absolutely recommend it, especially for those who are less adventurous with their tastes. All the elements of the waffle are familiar to most, from chocolate to the waffle structure. I’d be willing to bet that most people have tried a chocolate chip waffle before, but something about this egg waffle makes it special. It was crunchy on the outside, but still soft on the inside. Not too sweet, as if they perhaps used dark chocolate chips. Beware though, the waffle was so flaky it literally fell apart in my hands.
Audrey’s rating: 9/10
I love love love anything chocolate, and paired with waffles? That’s a match made in dessert heaven. Meet Fresh’s Chocolate Chip Egg Waffle isn’t your basic toasted Eggo waffle. It has a crisp exterior and a fluffy and moist interior that makes for the perfect bite each time. The waffle was super filling and a nice break from all of the more signature Meet Fresh desserts. The best part is how you get to pop off each little bubble of waffle, as it comes in a shape similar to enlarged bubble wrap.
Hot Grass Jelly Soup with Sesame Balls:
McKenzie’s rating: 8.3/10
Meet Fresh not only offers icy and cold desserts, but they also have a phenomenal hot dessert line. This was my first time having a hot dish from Meet Fresh, and the Hot Grass Jelly Soup did not disappoint.
I opted for the hot version of my favorite dish but with the addition of sesame balls instead of the mochi I normally get in the Icy Grass Jelly Signature. The sesame balls were a chewy and semi-sweet sensation. They are essentially glutinous rice balls with black sesame filling, boiled in a ginger, sugar and water mixture to give it flavor. This dish had the slightest hints of sweetness, pulling from the ginger-sugar water and herbal jelly, making it the perfect semi-sweet dessert. This dish is definitely Asian mom-approved.
Mango Milk Shaved Ice:
McKenzie’s rating: 8.5/10
As the first shaved ice dish I’ve tried from Meet Fresh, I was pleasantly surprised. The sweet mango cream shaved ice was astronomical and the mango chunks added a sour touch. The mangoes were very sour, too much for my preference, but beyond that, they added the perfect contrast to the sweet ice cream and mango drizzle. Not to mention, there were so many mango chunks, the servers were not stingy whatsoever. If summer were a dessert, it’d be this one. This dish ranked very highly on my listings, and I would definitely get this dish again. This dish on a hot summer day in June would do wonders.
Audrey’s rating: 9/10
I will never say no to anything with mangoes, and I really found no faults with this dessert. The mangoes paired nicely with the condensed milk and vanilla iced cream, and each bite contained a little bit of everything. Meet Fresh is definitely not stingy with its portions, and this dessert matched my definition of a sweet treat on a hot day to a T. My only suggestion for this dish would be perhaps to use ripe mangoes, but I think their tanginess balanced out the sweetness of everything else. All in all, a delicious dessert for any occasion or if you’re just looking for something tart and sweet.
Boba Caramel Pudding:
Serena’s rating: 4/10
I wouldn’t say anything was particularly wrong with this dessert, but it wasn’t something I’d try again. The boba was a bit hard and chewy, and the pudding itself didn’t have the best flavor. It was slightly bitter, but not in a good way. Overall, I could see the potential in the dish, but something with the execution just wasn’t there.
Audrey’s rating: 5/10
To me, this dessert was nothing special, just a tiny portion of caramel flan and mini boba. The flavors paired nicely, but nothing complimented each other and elevated the dish overall. The boba did not seem that fresh, and the pudding matched the type of flan you could find at a Japanese supermarket. I don’t have any major complaints about this dish, but it fell flat compared to everything else I tried. It certainly won’t be a dessert I order again the next time I visit Meet Fresh.
Red Bean Tofu Pudding:
Serena’s rating: 7/10
If you are not a fan of traditionally sweet, overwhelming desserts, this is definitely something you’ll like. A sweet soup filled with incredibly soft tofu chunks and red bean, this cold delight was refreshing and soothing at the same time. I’ve grown up eating red bean desserts, so the flavor wasn’t new to me. But if you’ve never had the chance to try red bean before, you’ll be surprised by the subtly sweet, almost nutty flavor. The tofu is extremely fragile and has nearly no taste, pairing perfectly with the red bean and sweet soup.
I vaguely remember disliking this exact dish my first time at Meet Fresh over five years ago, so perhaps it’s a bit of an acquired taste that comes with age or maturity. As a child, all I wanted was ice cream and cake and donuts with that abundance of sugar. I’ve grown out of those sickly sweet treats and find myself enjoying more delicate flavors, so if you can say the same about yourself, this might be something you want to try!
Audrey’s rating: 4/10
From mooncake filling to the filling of various breads my dad orders every week from Six Ping Bakery, red bean is a staple in my household. Unfortunately, I have never developed a fondness for its unique flavor, much to my parents’ dismay.
If you are a fan of reserved and faint flavors, this dessert might be just what you’re looking for. The abundance of tofu that came with the sweet soup was so silky that even scooping it up with a spoon broke it into chunks, and it highlighted the red bean’s distinct, almost earthy taste profile.
I rate this dish 4/10 solely because red bean is not my cup of tea. The dessert is miles away from the big bold flavors of other treats such as the Mango Milk Shaved Ice, which is more suited to my taste. If you enjoy traditional Taiwanese desserts that don’t scream sweetness though, this dish is definitely one I’d encourage you to try.
Fluffy Thai Tea Sago:
Serena’s rating: 6/10
Recently, my go-to drink at any boba store is Thai tea. I’ve tried numerous different brands of Thai tea over the past few months, and Meet Fresh’s is really nothing special. The taste is about the same as every other Thai tea, perhaps a little sweeter and less diluted. However, the uniqueness of the tiny sago is what makes this above average. While I’m not usually a fan of sago, as it’s too chewy for my preference, I found it to be a nice replacement for the usual boba pearls here. It works perfectly with the Thai tea, and the ratio of sago to drink was suitable as well. If you like Thai tea, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t love this drink, but if Thai isn’t your cup of tea, you should probably give something else a shot instead.
Overall, Meet Fresh should definitely be on your must-try list! Not only is it relatively close by on Bellaire Food Street, it’s surrounded by a variety of other Asian cuisines that will leave you just as impressed. So, if you ever get the chance to stop by Meet Fresh, consider trying some of these dishes and more. They will have you feeling like you just met “fresh.”
