I fell in love with Megan Moroney when I heard her song “Tennessee Orange.” Moroney croons about falling head over heels for a boy she just met. There was only one problem: He was a Tennessee football fan. Megan, who bleeds Georgia red, sings the song to her parents, asking them to put the college football rivalry aside and focus on how happy he makes her.
When Moroney released a Christmas album titled “Blue Christmas…Duh,” I shrieked with joy. I adore country music and feel so festive getting into the Christmas spirit. I couldn’t wait to see what she did.
“All I Want for Christmas is a Cowboy”
“All I Want for Christmas is a Cowboy” is my favorite song on the album. The song begins with an exciting, energetic beat that instantly puts a smile on my face. Moroney starts the song listing everything she doesn’t need for Christmas, including items like a pink guitar and a puppy. Once she finishes her list, she sings the lyrics “give me tall, hot, in a Stetson.” This lyric instantly drew me in. Moroney’s imagery makes the song entertaining as you can picture the exact man she is singing about. This description is continued with the lyrics, “So when you’re flying over Austin or Abilene, Wrap a bow around a boy in some Wrangler jeans” and “Put him in some new Luchesses, make him call me baby.” As a girl born and raised in Texas, my guilty pleasure is when the Lone Star State is mentioned in songs. Moroney’s song feels exactly how Christmas in Texas feels: over the top and extremely festive. This song will continue to play on repeat for me throughout the holiday season.
“Christmas Morning”
“Christmas Morning” is one of the more somber songs on the album. Moroney cleverly uses winter themes to tell the story of a relationship falling apart. I love that Moroney included a sadder song because it gives the album more variety. Most Christmas songs are happy and focus on the festivity of the season. However, for Moroney, a self-proclaimed “emo cowgirl,” including a more emotional song on the album fits her discography perfectly. The lyrics “We’ve been falling apart all year, and today, I can’t ignore it. Baby, when did our love stop feeling like Christmas morning?” showcase a more vulnerable side of the holiday season. The song discusses her fears of telling the truth about her failing relationship with her family and trying to appear okay while they are in town for the holidays. Moroney’s storytelling is incredibly beautiful and stays true to her roots.
“Blue Christmas”
Moroney does a beautiful cover of Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas,” The song starts with a calm guitar strum, and within, Moroney’s soft, raspy voice sings the opening line. Since she’s known for her signature dark blue color palette, this cover fits her incredibly well. During her “Am I Okay?” tour, her sparkly royal blue dresses and guitar became her trademark style. Moroney’s Christmas being blue just feels right. The lyrics “I’ll have a blue Christmas without you.” and “Won’t be the same, dear, if you’re not here with me.” are nostalgic of the original by Elvis is already known by most listeners.
“Blue Christmas… Duh” was another no-skip album from Moroney. She consistently releases good-quality and true-to-her-roots songs that hit the spot every time. If you need a good album for the holiday season, Moroney’s album is exactly what you need.
