Teaching through a new lens
“There was this thought that teachers always had to be disciplinarians, that you couldn’t really use your personality. In my head, there was always a ‘way to be a teacher’ and I was always more of a fun, campy person. But, it was when I started volunteering for my daughters classes that I started to see what teaching was about. Then I would teach, and the kids responded to the fun, silly parts and they would actually learn more. I was actually very overwhelmed at first when I started teaching here because Bellaire is just so big and diverse. But little by little, I started getting to know the kids, and instead of looking at all these situations around the classroom, I started seeing individuals. And then I saw them reacting to my personality and the way I was presenting. And I saw responses and success, and when they knew that I cared, it didn’t matter who they were, they responded. And seeing that light in them just open up, that’s the reason that I started to love this job.”
