Belles Shine in “Great Gatsby” Themed Spring Show
Apr 25, 2014
Belles performed their spring show during 6th period on Thursday, Apr. 24 for incoming 8th graders and English classes studying books from the 1920s and 7th period on Friday, Apr. 25 for all classes. They performed their show for the general public on Friday night. All of the dances in the show centered around the “Glitz and Glamor of the Roaring 20s” theme. Belles sponsor Cindi Denman felt inspired by costumes and music in “The Great Gatsby.”
“We loved all of the costumes and music in “The Great Gatsby,” Denman said. “[Director] Casey Potter suggested we do a “Great Gatsby” theme. We began to put it together in October, but we needed to widen the theme to get a few more dances. I suggested “Glitz and Glamor” and Ms. Potter added “of the Roaring 20s.”
After the team members voted on the theme, they began preparing in December for the show. Each dancer purchased the iconic red flapper dress, and the dancers watched the movie for inspiration on the bus to competition. As the preparation of the show progressed, dancers were divided into groups based on their dance style, ranging from lyrical to hip hop, after the competition season ended. With only a few months until the show, dancers were required to stay late for rehearsals in March and April. Current Captain and incoming Co-Colonel junior Sydney Duran led her lyrical group.
“I’m so proud of my group,” Duran said. “They started out not knowing any of the choreography, and they did such a great job in the show. All of the late nights practicing and rehearsing definitely paid off. These girls worked so hard every day, and the show was great.”
Denman agreed with Duran that the hard work and late nights paid off when the dancers performed.
“I am very proud of the young ladies for their hard work, time and dedication to make this spring show a wonderful success,” Denman said.
President of Belles senior Jessie Wilson wanted the show to be a memorable culmination of her time in Belles.
“This is my senior year, and I wanted to go out on a bang,” Wilson said. “Performing in the Belle’s Spring Show was a blast!”
Fellow senior Kaelin Smith loved the theme of the show and felt it was a perfect final experience with the Belles.
“I was so excited to participate in such a fun and glamorous show,” Smith said.
Colonel senior Hannah Davis reflected with her fellow seniors about her years in Belles and final performance.
“This was a great show and a great experience,” Davis said. “We had a new director this year, and we’ve improved so much. Officers practiced about three hours every day, and I certainly hope and think all of our hard work paid off. If you work hard on this team, you can accomplish anything. If you make good friendships with everyone and have a positive attitude, you can go really far on this team. I’m so proud of everything we’ve accomplished!”
