The following interview introduces the new registrar Willie Mae Franklyn.

How has the work load been so far this year?

Incredible. There’s a lot of work to be done, but I’m enjoying it. I’m enjoying learning the new things that come with the job. I’ve experienced working with a lot of it before in other positions, but this one brings out a whole new dimension to it. Everyone I’ve worked with is really nice and very helpful.

Why did you choose to work at Bellaire?

I’ve worked at Bellaire before. I was here for four years and left in 2010. I worked on finishing my LPC, and I saw that there was an opportunity to return. I was just fortunate to have the opportunity to come back.

Why did you decide become a registrar?

It brings together several areas. Registrars are usually former teachers, but when I was here at Bellaire, I was a lead counsellor and an assistant principal. I also have experience working with special education. It ties together all of those areas. Most of all I enjoy working with students and parents, so it’s a great opportunity.

Where did you go to college?

I’m from Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas, about 45 miles away. I started as a biology major then changed and graduated as a Spanish major.

What was your childhood dream job?

I wanted to be an actress. I thought it would be great to be able to transform yourself into any character, but I always dreamed about going up on stage and receiving my Oscar. I’d be in the kitchen washing dishes at night, and I would pretend to walk over and go to the mic and thank everyone who helped to make it possible.

Do you have a quote or mantra that you live your life by?

I guess the main one would be treat others the way you want to be treated. I know how I want to be treated, and I want to treat others the same way. I also think about my own children, how I would like them to be treated by others.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I’m the youngest of twelve children. I don’t know how much fun that is, but it’s different. I’m kidding; it’s great to have lots of older brothers and sisters.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I’m just glad to be back. It’s certainly a challenge, but I’m enjoying it very much and everyone has been great.
