Students from Government classes help register voters on election day

On November 3rd, numerous adults began to file in an elementary in Alief Independent School District. They went to the library and registered at a desk set up by high school students who helped them vote. Senior Linda Pham was one of the recruited students. She claimed that the activity made her feel purposeful in the real world.

“We conducted poll and helped voters register.” Pham said. “I mostly checked their personal information and directed them to the right places.”

Staying active for 12 hours, Pham said that the student volunteers received very serious directions about their duties.

“We were told, very seriously, to not give any political insinuation or bias when giving instructions.” Pham said. “In fact, we couldn’t even talk about our personal political preferences while in the voter registration room.”

Similar to Pham’s experience, senior Megan Doan worked as a registration assistant for precinct judge Jim Hotze at the Bellaire City Hall.

“It was a meaningful experience for me,” Doan said. “We learned about the importance of political participation in AP Government but actually taking a part in the process felt much more real.”
