Day one of the Students vs. Teachers Doubles Ping Pong Club Tournament ended with a resounding victory for seniors Eli Vetrano and Hrish Patel.
Two teams of students and two teams of teachers competed in the best of three elimination matches against each other yesterday, Oct. 25.
The first team of students, freshmen Sydney Kottukkal and Sai Kasthala, played against AP Physics 1 teacher Gary Johnson and Italian teacher Maria Borsa.
The lead swung back and forth, each game a tight race to 11, but the match ended up on the side of the teachers with a score of 11-7 and 11-8, handing them a 2-0 victory.
Vetrano and Patel avenged their fallen comrades against the three AP World History teachers, Jennifer Kuhleman, Justin Cothran and Alan Heise, in a quick 2-0 sweep: 11-5 and 11-4.
In the finals, Vetrano and Patel faced off against Johnson and Borsa.
The first game was evenly matched with both teams going back and forth until Vetrano and Patel eventually emerged victorious 11-8.
The second game looked to be in the teachers’ favor after a 3-1 lead, but the students soon hit their stride and won four points in a row, bringing the score to 5-3.
Vetrano and Patel rode that newfound momentum and ended the game 11-4, winning the match 2-0.
For Vetrano, this victory wasn’t the most important thing.
“I feel pretty good. I won, so there’s a big plus,” Vetrano said. “[But I] had just been playing with [my friends] and I didn’t really care about the results that much.”
Borsa shared a similar sentiment regarding winning and losing.
“I love it. I think it’s really fun that teachers get to play with the students,” Borsa said. “I was very happy that the students won. Because the reality is that teachers go to these tournaments not really to win because our win is always when the students win.”
