The varsity tennis team performed a perfect sweep at the Katy Varsity tournament this Friday as all five Bellaire doubles pairs won each of their matches.
“Overall I felt confident about my tennis, we won every match decisively,” senior Veer Tummala said.
Moving down from class A4 to B4, the team was able to perform riskier plays than they were typically comfortable with.
“Until the finals, we had fairly easy matchups [and lower-stake games],” Tummala said. “I went for a tweener shot, a riskier play, which is something I normally don’t do.”
Rather than playing down to the competition, the team kept a growth-conscious mentality throughout the day.
“Playing in this class was a different type of mental game, we needed to stay focused and not play down to our opponents level,” senior and captain Saachi Gupta said. “It was really easy to question why we were there but we persevered and made the best of the situation. We had the opportunity to try different plays because the stakes were lower”
Partners Gupta and Tummala won all three of their matches, advancing to the final round of the tournament. Winning the final match, scoring 6-2 in the first set and 6-1 in the second set, the pair brought home one of Bellaire’s five first-place medals for the team.
“Overall, it wasn’t what we were expecting but at least we got some experience and a medal out of it,” Gupta said.
The district tournament will take place on Apr. 24 at Lee LeClear Tennis Center.
