The Study of Life Club members created pressed flower bookmarks in the club’s first meeting on Aug. 28 in room 2618. Officers discussed future plans for the club with over 15 returning and 20 new members.
The club opened the meeting with a presentation about the club along with officer introductions. Officers passed out pressed flowers, glue, bookmarks and snacks before giving instructions on how to craft personalized pressed flower bookmarks.
Returning Study of Life Club member and sophomore Adriana Saenz said that she’s excited for the club to try new things. Saenz has been a club member since its founding last year.
“I found [the meeting] very interesting,” Saenz said. “It was also very open with nice and kind people in it. We’re learning about [biology], which is also interesting. I’m excited to learn new [things].”
The Study of Life Club incorporates biology lessons into their activities. Last year, they hosted a meeting where members could create their own candy DNA and mini terrariums.
Second year vice president and sophomore Candace Huang said that she thinks the overall atmosphere of the club brings people in.
“Everyone’s nice to each other and everyone’s having fun,” Huang said. “The activities are super hands on, super fun and it really helps you channel your creativity.”
Huang says the club will try new things like volunteer work and hands-on activities this year. She plans on overseeing meetings and helping the president in meeting and activity planning.
“I think [the meeting] was successful because people actually came and engaged with the activity,” Huang said.
President and sophomore Katy Wang originally started the club last year in order to prepare for the USA Biology Olympiad.
“It just kind of became what it is today,” Wang said. “It was originally supposed to be more of a studying club, hence the name study of life, then it became a more artistic club.”
Wang says the club will focus on both the biology and artistic aspects this year, though for different purposes. Wang hopes the club will help prepare students for USABO and bring in new members through their arts and crafts.
“Even though [our club] is a biology club, it’s centered more on artistic activities and that could draw a lot of people in,” Wang said. “I know a lot of people are interested in arts, but they also like science too. So it’s a good mix of both worlds.”
